We stagger back to the hotel together. There’s a strange camaraderie in it, in how neither of us can stand properly after the drinks Satan fed us—no matter how much Colton tries to.

“I think his potion doubled the effect,” he snarls, bracing himself in the open doorway of our room as he visibly struggles to keep control of his insides.

“Maybe this is a case of better out than in,” I mumble, leaning on the wall inside the door and slowly sliding—against my will—to the floor.

“No. If I start vomiting, I won’t stop.”

It’s so unexpected, so un-Colton-like, that I start giggling. My head falls backward and I lose myself in quiet laughter.

It takes me a second to realize Colton has joined me, somehow managing to shut the door without me noticing. I gape at him for a moment, wondering exactly how drunk he must be to be sitting on the floor with me. But he looks as surprised as I am, so I suppose that answers my question.

Unease stirs in my stomach, along with all the liquid regret. It feels almost like a betrayal, sitting here like this with Colton, knowing he doesn’t want me to see him in this state. It’s not like I feel responsible for it, but I’d rather not deal with him stonewalling me tomorrow in response.

I’m not sure which is worse. At least Marek’s brand of fire and destruction invites you to meet it head on. Despite his initial anger toward me, he was open to change. I think some part of him begged for it—wanted me to prove I wasn’t what he feared me to be.

Colton doesn’t do any of that. I’m slowly learning there’s no chance to prove yourself with him, no space to meet him halfway. Colton just leaves.

Sighing, I brace myself against the wall and slowly climb up. “Don’t sleep out here or you’ll get a crick in your neck,” I mumble, and stagger forward to my room.

Something snags around my wrist, and takes me a long, long moment to realize it’s Colton.

I look back, staring at his hand clutched around mine, feeling the warmth of his skin. There’s something in his eyes, something that’s torn wide open in a way Colton never is. My heart stutters, and it feels suddenly too personal, watching him like this. Too intimate.

I don’t look away.

“Cat,” he says quietly, his slurred words reminding me suddenly of that night all those weeks ago, when he came into my room, desperate to apologize.

My brows knit together, thoughts racing too fast to catch. It’s a side of him I forgot existed—what lies beneath his careful control.

“Sometimes…” he says slowly, and suddenly I want to run—far, far away where I can’t hear what he’s about to say. I tug against his grip, but he holds me fast. He wets his lips and continues. “Sometimes, I don’t think you’re the monster. I think I am.”

Everything stops.

“What did you just say?” I ask breathlessly.

He doesn’t appear to hear me.

“You’re… trying,” he says slowly.
